No one ever said that I was fast. After decades of teaching the same 20-minute warm-up, I have recently found something even better to add to my practice routine. I now play the same recording as before but have found added benefits to this routine by changing the tempo (doubling the speed) and form (playing the scales twice) of the original exercise. Included below is a copy of the updated exercise. The benefit of the original 20-minute warm-up was achieved by gradually increasing to higher notes as well as including lower notes to keep the lip flexible. By performing these…
Petite Piece Concertante has been one of the main staples in the literature of our instrument and also one of the most deceivingly difficult solos to perform in a true musical fashion. One reason for this musical deception is the fact that the solo is not an ordinary solo where the performer starts at measure one and continues to the final measure. This “warhorse” is actually a series of short, four measure solos, each extremely musical by itself. For that reason, I have decided to illustrate this collection of short melodic segments in the following manner in order to make…
This arrangement was done to recognize a true Miracle in our families’ lives. My wife was diagnosed with cancer and our family has struggled for the past year with this shocking news. After undergoing two different sessions of immune therapy, radiation and endless visits with countless physicians, our best hope was for an extended life of this precious Christian. Last week, while again visiting our family doctor, we were told that the cancer in her liver has suddenly disappeared! This arrangement can be downloaded free of charge as a token to the great works of our Lord and Savior, Jesus…
Sometimes I like to visit old projects from the past as in this case. Etude playing alone is not an activity I enjoy but coupling the same etude with a second part can add much more excitement and enthusiasm to the activity. This arrangement of Arban Characteristic Study #1- Trumpet Duet has been a very popular item for us at trumpetensemblemusic.com

If nothing else, reading this document will give you some idea as to how far we have progressed in brass literature…….. He founded the renowned Goldman Band of New York City and the American Bandmasters Association. Goldman’s works are characterized by their pleasant and catchy tunes, as well as…

From time to time I think up some interesting challenges for my readers and this post is one of the most practical when learning or improving ones double tonguing technique. Everyone recognizes the “Orange Blossom Special” but few have had the courage and desire to perform it on a trumpet. There might be a logical reason why this has not been done, but onward we trudge. I have prepared this little exercise in order to help me gain access to this fiddle tune for I have challenged my Bluegrass ensemble to accompany me on it next season and I can’t think of a better way…
